Since 2001, SALZBRENNER STAGETEC MEDIAGROUP has been involved in
a project in Africa. In cooperation with the “Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe
und Selbstverantwortung - 3. Welt” society (Help for Self Help
and Self Responsibility - 3rd World — HSS) from Löffingen,
we support the funding of a girls’ educational centre in Ghana.
The centre named “College of Profession” is sited in
Jasikan. This small town has about 3,000 inhabitants and is located
approximately 200 kilometres (120 miles) north of the Ghanaian capital
Accra, near the border to Togo. Thanks to the nearby reservoir, the
mountainous landscape is green and flowering. Nevertheless, people
here are poor: There are almost no jobs, and the young folks move
away to the capital looking for employment. Health care is of low
quality, and the life expectancy is just between 54 and 58 years
(men and women, respectively).
The construction of the school building with its six classrooms
started in 1999. The project is planned as a self-help scheme: The
donations are used for purchasing building materials such as sand,
bricks, or concrete; the actual construction is carried out by local
workers.
The College of Profession offers 3-year courses where girls can
qualify as office administrators or approved home economists. It
is the aim of the HSS society to improve the status of those girls
in the Ghanaian society. This is one of but a few chances for Ghanaian
women to take their lives into their own hands.
The College was opened in October 2003. The girls and their families
build much hope in the education: There were more than 300 applicants
for the 70 available places. The girls aged between 16 and 20 are
taught by four full-time and six part-time instructors. Four more
employees were hired for caretaking and security tasks. |
