AURUS with simulateous 5.1 and stereo panning

116th AES: SALZBRENNER STAGETEC MEDIAGROUP presented the whole range of products of all members of the group

Berlin, May 2004: One of the most important magnets on the booth was the AURUS digital mixing console which has already been sold more than 20 times throughout the world since its introduction into the market in 2003. There were two AURUS consoles on display, avoiding long queueing for a demonstration. One of the consoles was combined with a smaller slave console which can for example be used in theatres as a mobile console within the main hall. The AURUS hardware, or more precisely, the AURUS’ RMC-card, already offers a connection for a second mixing console. Therefore, a simple fibre-optic cable connection between the small console and the AURUS RMC-card is all that is required. There’s no need to program anything!
Designed from scratch as a multichannel console, AURUS features a completely new panning concept: The pan is calculated seperately for every bus! Thus, if a mono signal is sent to a stereo bus, it is routed to the left and right bus channels with regard to the panpot setting. Now, if the same signal is concurrently sent to a 5.1 bus, it will be routed to the three front channels and the two surround channels accordingly. Consequently, different pan settings are computed for one and the same signal when routing it to different busses. This new approach is of enormous benefit for production: Multichannel and stereo mixes can be created at the same time, thus eliminating the need for subsequent fold down options! Thus, a mix can be optimized for both applications without considerable additional effort.

NEXUS with new boards Too, there were a lot of novelties to see for the NEXUS audio routing system. One highlight was the new XSDI board which allows for de-embedding, routing and embedding of SDI audio signals within NEXUS. This board is equipped with sample-rate converters and can route SDI signals with different sample rates and sync sources. Another benefit are the new connectors on the XSDI board. The user can choose between BNC and fibre connectors and between single mode and multi mode optical cables. The connectors are only socketed but not soldered and can be changed even without removing the board!
Another new card is the NEXUS XER input board. It offers dual functionality as AES/EBU and S/PDIF input module and enables direct connection of a digital microphone. Greatly enhanced sample-rate converter functionality is just one major benefit. Any AES/EBU source between 32 and 192 KHz connects to the board and can be converted to the NEXUS internal sample rate. The new XER board also supports all relevant functions of the AES-42 standard for digital microphones, including light signalling, or directivity changes.
DELEC introduces ORATIS and CENTRIX Since becoming a member of SALZBRENNER STAGETEC MEDIAGROUP in 2002, Germany’s manufacturer of digital intercom systems DELEC has re-developed their whole digital intercom product range and now proudly introduced the ORATIS digital intercom system that presents some major software enhancements and hardware changes compared to its predecessor IC48 MKII.
ORATIS hardware is based on a 19“ rack system with plug-in cards. The smallest card frame, ORATIS Kompakt, measures just one rack unit and accommodates up to six plug-in intercom cards. Larger systems are configured with mainframes in three, six or nine unit heights. Up to 256 subscriber units can be connected to a fully populated mainframe!
Campus-wide systems with upwards of 256 subscribers lend themselves to the installation of a central CENTRIX intercom router. Occupying only 3U of 19” rack space, this brand-new CENTRIX router serves as the compact core of the intercom system, providing both routing capacity and fibre-optic connections to the ORATIS mainframes.
C.A.S. MIX with LAN functionality Another highlight on the show was the C.A.S. MIX, a modular mixing system combined with NEXUS, mainly used in Theatre and Opera.
C.A.S. MIX bases on a very innovative idea, combining audio technology with IT practice and networking. The audio processor, featuring a DSP unit as the core of the mixing console, connects to all the other components using LAN technology. First and foremost this applies to the control surface – the actual mixing console. A MADI line is used solely for the audio connection the NEXUS network. As usual within a network, each C.A.S. MIX board uses a dedicated IP address for communication with the DSP unit. This enables C.A.S. MIX to offer a very special feature: Basically, each console module can be installed at any physical location within the network! This distributed architecture comes in handy in Theatre installations, where modules can be installed exactly where they are needed. And even a connection via Wireless LAN is possible, allowing for controlling the console with a wireless fader module within the hall of the Theatre.

There were so many interesting products and details to show, that SALZBRENNER STAGETEC MEDIAGROUP presented them on a large area of 140 m2, on the largest booth at the exhibition.
