Automation

A standard feature of the CANTUS console is the snapshot automation. Not only the faders but also the joysticks used for surround mixes are motorized. (Motorized joysticks are not available on U.S. units.) On request, the console can be equipped with a dynamic automation. The automation functions are mostly operated from the console.

Snapshot Automation

The snapshot automation gathers all audio parameters and channel links and stores them as a status to an editable list. Up to 99 statuses can be stored and recalled at any time for each project. Copying channel configurations and parameter settings to other channels is included in the snapshot automation, too.

Sequencer Automation

An optional sequencer automation is available that provides sequential time-related status recall with definable fade-over curves. In addition, MIDI messages can be transmitted to external devices for sound or effect control.

Dynamic Automation

The timecode-controlled dynamic automation detects changes made to all audio parameters in a 10-ms processing grid. Mix-downs are managed on the basis of an extensive mix tree. Automation functions such as Read, Absolute Write, Trim Write, Auto Return, Take Over (manual return), and Isolate Move (punch in/out) are provided for each channel.

Multi-Channel Formats

A multi-channel option is available for CANTUS main consoles. The following multi-channel formats are supported:

• stereo (2-channel)
• Dolby Surround 4-2-4 (4-channel)
• HDTV 3-2 (5-channel)
• Dolby SR-D (6-channel)
• Sony SDDS (8-channel, optional)

Talk/Routing Matrix

The universal concept integrates talk and routing functions within a single matrix. The talk/routing matrix available for the CANTUS mixing-console system provides extended communication functions:

• hierarchical paging stands with priority logic
• fader-controlled routing
• routing of different programs to different studios

The N–1 System

NEXUS Operation

In addition, the NEXUS program can be run on the main console for accurate routing-system control – the user will then be able to set parameters such as the full-scale level or the global sample rate.

Moreover, NEXUS can be connected to dedicated control computers, so it can be operated simultaneously from multiple places and independently of the mixing-console system – for example, if CANTUS was allowed to access only a part of the NEXUS network.

In this case, inputs and outputs used by the console are protected and cannot be cleared or modified by other users.

Extended CANTUS/NEXUS Functions

The NEXUS system provides not only audio connections but also even more functionality to CANTUS:

• talk-microphone and amplifier inputs
• relays for remote start and signaling
• machine-control relays and control protocols
• external monitoring of NEXUS signals at CANTUS consoles

CANTUS Offline Editor

The CANTUS offline editor allows for setting up CANTUS projects on a standard PC independently of a CANTUS console. The hard editor emulates the entire CANTUS/NEXUS audio system, providing the user with the familiar graphical interface – all standard editing functions are available.

The editor allows, for instance, preparing a production in the office while the studio is still occupied, or routine tasks such as channel labeling or input assignment do not require pricey studio time anymore.
Data exchange between the editor and the console is achieved using MOD media. For this purpose, the offline editor features a standard MOD drive.
